Get the F.O.

Get the F.O. is a stepped animation featuring an alien trying to get into his UFO after a long day on Earth. Unfortunately, his key to the flying object isn’t working. After several failed attempts and with no sign of the UFO appearing, the alien loses his temper and breaks the key. The animation ends with a pleasant and relieving surprise, leading to an alien celebration and a stylish exit.

I created this animation during the final weeks of 2024, and I’d say it was a great way to end the year. My goal for this project was to craft a stepped animation that was dynamic and polished enough to serve as a final animation piece. I was particularly inspired by one of my peers, who excels at creating dynamic stepped animations with a choppy style that feels explosive and energetic. When combined with great spacing and timing, his work conveyed a fun and slightly old-school animation vibe. From this inspiration, I decided to experiment with the style while incorporating my own creative touch.

The stepped animation style is most evident in the alien's body mechanics. From his dance moves to his frustration poses, these segments were animated without in-betweens. Toward the end, however, I introduced in-betweens for key moments: the breaking of the key, the alien's morphing as he gets beamed up, and the flight into space. These were areas where added detail was necessary to effectively convey my vision.

Timing and spacing played a significant role in bringing the project together. For example, when the alien looks up after pressing the key, anticipation was crucial, requiring a well-timed hold to build the moment. Similarly, the alien's frustrated and frantic key-pressing needed to be animated on 1s and 2s to achieve natural speed and timing. It was these thoughtful touches of balancing stepped animation with moments of fluid detail, that brought the magic to life. Overall, this project was a refreshing and rewarding experience any animator could ask for, and I’m proud of how it turned out!
